Toothpick Span

Trail 1

The purpose of this project is to create a span made of toothpicks that spans 15cm.

Our directions were to construct designe a bridge span then we need to measure a load it can carry. After that the model of the bridge span by adding a maximum(6) toothpicks more and to measure the load it now can carry.

My partner's arm is broken so i was creating the structure but he was helping me with the ideas how to fix it. We used 26 toothpicks.

For the second trial, we add 6 more toothpicks and made the structure stronger by adding toothpicks on the top right and left side and the same things in the bottom.

Our model or a span was able to hold more weight on the second trial. On the first trial, the structure held 861.2g in total. On the second trial, it held 868.9g. We improve it a little bit. At the first trial we failed because the structer was twisted and the joins were so weak and skinny. The reason for failure on the second structure was that the structure twisted again by the pressure of the weight but slowly because we add and made it stronger.

If I were to do this project again, I would change the our model and add more toothpicks, I think our structure was not ready because the glue was still drying and that's why it twisted again but slowly than before. But it was much stronger than before we just needed more time to dry it.  I would choose to build a structure that would have different design because we can make structer much stronger and without twisting.

Toothpick Span

Trail 2

Our directions were to construct designe a bridge span then we need to measure a load it can carry. After that the model of the bridge span by adding a maximum(12) toothpicks more and to measure the load it now can carry.

We were enjoying to build the new structure and makind an ideas how to fix it. We used 36 toothpicks. For the second test, we add 4 more toothpicks and made the structure stronger by adding toothpicks on the sides by diagonal.

Our first test in the Trail #2, our model was not able to hold more weight than a basket and we failed it with the great pleasure. On the first test, the structure held 223.4g in total.

On the second test, it held 520.5g. We add 4 toothpicks in the middle sides to make it more stable and strong withou. We improve it a little bit. At the first trial we failed because the strut twisting so fast. Structure was twisted and the joins were so weak and skinny.

The reason for failure on the second structure was that the structure twisted again by the pressure of the weight but slowly because we add and made it stronger.

If I were to do this project again, I would use a super glue, because there are two benefits 1st- faster to dry and 2nd - your structure will  get strong and instead of twisting it will breaking.

I think our structure was too weak in the middle of two sides because sides were too strong but the middle was too weak. But second test was much stronger than before the first one we just needed to make middle strong.

I would choose to build a structure that would have different design because we can try somthing new and compare how it will work.

Our designs were different only in one thing we had a double toothpicks on the trail 2 and on teh trail 1 we had only single toothpicks on each sides. In cheneral our structures were simmular.

In the trail 1 (test 2) we add toothpicks in the middle by horizontal way on the top and buttom it helps a little but still was twisting.

In the taril 2 (test 1) we add double toothpicks on the middle by diagonal way in the middle.

In my opinion trail 1 was the best because our construction was bigger but trail 2 (test 1) was so tiny and weak. Trail 1 balanced the weight in proportion wchich made our structure stable, still twisting but balanced. In trail 2 (test 1) our construction was tuny and poor it was too strong on the sides which made the structure unstable and disbalance it was twisting too fast and faling down not even hold a 1st weigh only the backet.
